Sintering

Sintered steel components manufactured through the compaction and sintering of metal powders, ideal for high-volume production runs requiring excellent repeatability and competitive costs.

SR Tech manages the supply of sintered metal components with production in China and Kanban stock management in Parma, simplifying the supply chain and ensuring continuity of supply.

HOW POWDER METALLURGY WORKS

What is Powder Metallurgy?

Powder metallurgy is a manufacturing process used to produce metal components from metal powders that are compacted in a precision tool and subsequently subjected to a controlled sintering cycle.

The process involves compressing metal powder at high pressure to create a “green part”, which is then sintered in a high-temperature furnace. During this stage, the metal particles bond together, giving the component its final mechanical properties.

This technology is particularly suitable for high-volume production of mechanical components with geometries compatible with the pressing direction, offering excellent dimensional repeatability, efficient material utilization and competitive unit costs.

For many applications, powder metallurgy makes it possible to produce near-net-shape components that require little or no additional machining, reducing manufacturing time and overall production costs compared to traditional manufacturing methods.

Compared to other manufacturing technologies, powder metallurgy offers its greatest advantages when components are intended for medium to high production volumes and feature geometries compatible with the powder compaction process. In these situations, it is possible to achieve excellent dimensional repeatability, minimal material waste and highly competitive unit costs.

The process also allows certain geometric features to be integrated directly into production, reducing or eliminating secondary machining operations and improving overall manufacturing efficiency.

SR Tech supplies sintered components in carbon steels and stainless steels, supporting customers in the technical evaluation of their projects, the selection of the most suitable manufacturing solution and the management of continuous supply programs through dedicated inventory and Kanban systems, ensuring consistent quality and reliable availability.

THE ADVANTAGES OF THIS TECHNOLOGY

When Powder Metallurgy Is the Right Choice

R

Competitive Costs for High-Volume Production

Powder metallurgy is particularly cost-effective for medium to high production volumes thanks to short cycle times and a highly automated manufacturing process.

R

Efficient Material Utilization

The process uses only the amount of material required to produce the component, significantly reducing waste compared to machining from solid stock.

R

Excellent Dimensional Repeatability

Production through precision tooling and powder compaction ensures consistent part quality and stable process performance over time.

R

Reduced Machining Requirements

Many dimensions and functional features can be achieved directly during the compaction process, minimizing secondary machining operations and lowering overall production costs.
